He wakes at ten to five, before the alarm, the way he has woken before the alarm for years now.
For about four seconds there is nothing. No name, no date, no list. Just a man and a ceiling and the gray coming up behind the blind. Four seconds of a life with no weight on it.
Then it lands.
His mother's appointment is Thursday and he has not rung the surgery. The boy needs a form signed and the form is in the car and the car is cold. There is a message from his sister he read at eleven last night and did not answer, and she will have seen that he read it. Somebody at work is waiting on something he promised on Monday. The dog has not been out since nine.
He has not stood up yet. He has not put one foot on the floor, and he is already behind every single person who needs him.
So he does what he has trained himself to do. He goes in swinging. Feet down, kettle on, phone in his hand before the tap has run, answering his sister first because she is the one he feels worst about, and by twenty past five he has done four useful things and lost the whole day, because he never began it. He collected it.
That is the part I want to say slowly, because it is the part that gets missed by everybody who loves him.
He did not begin his day. He woke up in the middle of a day that had already started without him, and he spent his morning running after a boat that left while he was sleeping.
And here is what nobody sees, because he is capable and he is kind and he gets it all done. Somewhere between the ceiling and the kettle a sentence is spoken over him, and it is spoken every single morning, and it has never once been said out loud: you are late, and you owe them, and the only way to be a good man today is to pay it down.
I have stood on a slope at first light and watched the sun come up over ground I did not make, on a morning I did not schedule, and I know that feeling of owing it something. It is a lie that arrives dressed as responsibility, which is exactly why it is so hard to catch. Nobody suspects a debt that looks like love.

You are not late to a day that has been kept all night
Two things are true in that bedroom, and they are not the same size, and almost everyone gets them the wrong way round.
The list is real. The appointment is real, the form is real, the sister is real and she is waiting. Nobody here is going to tell you the list is an illusion. It is not. It is your life, and most of it is your life because you said yes to people, which is not a fault.
The debt is not real. That is the other thing, and it is the bigger one.
Listen to what the accounting actually is.
And you, who were dead in your trespasses, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.Colossians 2:13 and 14
The record of debt. The itemized page. The line by line account of what was owed and by whom, with legal demands written down the margin so that nobody could argue.
He did not reduce it. He did not restructure it. He took the page off the wall and put a nail through it, and a nailed page cannot be presented to you in the morning, because a nailed page is no longer in anyone's hand.
So when the accusation comes up the stairs at ten to five, notice what it is doing. It is holding up a page that has a nail through it and reading you the total.
Now hear the second thing, and this one is about the morning itself.
There is a reason God fed a whole people by making them gather food every single morning and forbidding them to keep it overnight. It went bad if they kept it. They woke up with nothing, every day, for forty years, and it was not a punishment. It was the design.
You were never meant to wake up already supplied. You were meant to wake up empty and be met.
So the emptiness you feel at ten to five, that hollow before the kettle, is not evidence that you are failing at life. It is the ordinary condition of a person who is fed daily by Someone who is already awake. The ground was never yours to hold up. It is held. It has been held all night, through every hour you were unconscious and doing nothing at all for anybody, and not one thing fell.
Let me name the pit before I say another word about the climb.
You are tired in a way that sleep does not touch. You are tired of being the one who remembers. You are tired of the small hot shame that arrives when someone says they messaged you, and you are so tired of starting every single day from behind that you have stopped believing there is any other way for a day to start. You have begun to dread the evening a little, because the evening leads to the ceiling, and the ceiling leads to the list.
I am not going to cheer at you from the top of that. I have sat in it. I am going to tell you what is true and then hand you the words.
You are not behind. You are early, and the reason you are early is that Somebody was up before you.
So here is the turn, and it is a small one, and small is the point.
You do not need a different life. You need a different first minute.
Right now, wherever you are and whatever hour it is, the day you are inside of is being kept by God and not by you. That is not a feeling to work up. It is a fact to stand on, and you can stand on it while you are still tired, still behind on the messages, still dreading Thursday.
And if you are reading this at four in the afternoon rather than at five in the morning, you have not missed anything. There is no window on this. A morning dose taken in the afternoon has been taken. The One who feeds daily is not keeping a chart of when you got up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud before your feet leave the floor. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not a trick of wording: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours to speak, because you belong to Him and He is in you. How He orders the hours after that is His to decide, and whatever He does with your list, the ownership of your morning has already changed hands.
- Morning, you do not get to hand me a bill. The Word of God says the record of debt that stood against me was set aside and nailed to the cross, so what Christ has already paid I do not pay twice. I stand on this floor as a paid man, not a late one.
- Behind, get off my back in the name of Jesus. I am not chasing a day that began without me, because the God who never sleeps kept this house all night and He was not behind. What He kept while I slept, I do not have to catch.
- Feet, you are standing on ground the Lord is holding. Jesus, You are Lord of the morning, so my first minute belongs to the Maker of mornings and not to the list. I begin held, and I begin on time.
