The carriage stopped in the tunnel for eleven minutes.
That was nineteen months ago. He has not been on that line since, and he is not on it now. He is lying in his own bed at ten to twelve with the window open and the street quiet, and he is in the carriage anyway.
He knows the whole thing by heart. The lights staying on, which was somehow worse. The way the air went thick. The man opposite doing a crossword and not looking up, and the enormous, ridiculous shame of realizing he was going to have to make a sound in front of that man. His own hand on the glass. Twelve minutes to get to the surface afterwards and he does not remember eight of them.
But that is not what is keeping him awake, and this is the part nobody tells you about.
What is keeping him awake is the next one.
He is lying in the dark running a scan. Chest, fine. Hands, fine. Breathing, a bit shallow, but is that because he is checking. And now that he has noticed the checking, is the checking making it start. He has become an instrument for detecting his own alarm, so sensitive that he now sets it off himself, and he does this most nights, and he is so tired.
Nineteen months of not being on that train, and he has spent almost every night of it in the tunnel.
And now I am going to stop saying he.
Because you have a carriage, or an aisle, or a kitchen, or a car on a slip road, and the terrible arithmetic of it is that you have had one attack and then two hundred rehearsals. The first one happened to you. The rest you have hosted.
If somebody is reading this out loud to you and your eyes are shut, keep them shut. You do not need to see anything for the next few minutes, and you do not need to do anything either. Just stay where you are and let this be said to you.

Help is only ever issued into the room you are in
I want to start with something that has to be said before anything else, and said plainly.
Your panic is not a failure of faith. It is not evidence of anything about your walk with God, or your trust, or your character. A body that fires an alarm is a body. Yours has a system in it that was built to save your life, and at some point in a tunnel it fired when there was nothing to save you from, and it has been jumpy ever since, the way a smoke detector goes off at toast for a week after a real fire. That is not sin. Nobody in this message is going to lay one gram of that on you, and if anyone ever has, they were wrong, and I am sorry.
Now, the thing about the next one.
There is a line in Isaiah spoken to a people who had just been described in the smallest terms anyone has ever been described in. Not mighty Israel. Not chosen nation. The words used are worm and few in number. This is God addressing people at the end of their own resources, who have no case to make for themselves at all.
For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, "Fear not, I am the one who helps you."Isaiah 41:13
Notice what it does not say.
It does not say you will never be afraid again. It does not say the tunnel is finished, or that your body will never do that again, and I am not going to say it either, because I am not authorized to and you would not believe me anyway.
It says: I am holding your right hand. Present. Ongoing. The grammar is a hand that is closed around yours right now while the sentence is being spoken.
And here is the mercy hidden in that, which is exactly the mercy the desert taught.
In the wilderness the bread came down every morning and it could not be kept. Anyone who gathered double for tomorrow found it spoiled by first light. People have read that as a rule about greed. It is not. It is a rule about love, and it says something enormous: God will not issue you tomorrow's grace tonight, because grace is not a supply, it is a Person, and He is not going to send you a parcel when He intends to come Himself.
Which means the room you are lying in fear of, the next attack, the one that has not happened, is a room with no bread in it. Not because God is withholding. Because it is not a room yet. There is nothing to eat in a place that does not exist.
But the hand. The hand is not rationed by the room. The hand that is holding your right hand tonight, here, in this bed, in the dark, at whatever hour this has found you, is the identical hand that is holding it in the room you are dreading. He does not let go on the way there. He does not hand you over at the door.
You have been trying to survive the next one in advance, alone, with no supply, in a room He has not arrived in yet, because it does not exist yet. No wonder you are exhausted. You have been doing the impossible every night for nineteen months.
Stop going there. Not by trying harder to think about something else. By noticing that there is a hand around yours in the room you are actually in.
So here is what is on the table at this hour, and it is a small thing, and small is the whole point.
You do not have to solve the next attack tonight. You have been asked for nothing you cannot do lying down with your eyes shut. There is exactly one thing true enough to carry you through the next ten minutes, and it holds: He has your right hand, He said fear not from inside the room and not from the doorway, and He is not leaving before morning.
That is not a technique for stopping panic. It is a Person in a dark house.
And when the light comes back, tell one human being about the nights. Not because this is not enough, but because you were never meant to hold it on your own, and God very often looks like a friend who knows. Keep whatever care you already have in your hands. If it ever goes further than dread, as far as not wanting to be here at all, say so out loud to somebody tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line will answer. Reaching for a human being is not a lack of faith. It is what the hand in the dark is for.
Declare this over yourself
Say them lying down, in the dark, no lights, nothing to look at. In Christ this authority is yours, and it is delegated: you are not talking yourself out of anything, you are speaking what has already been given to you by the One who is holding you. And you speak it under His will, because how this goes tonight belongs to Him, and He is good in the dark.
- Fear of fear, you are not my future, and you do not get to book the next room. God says He holds my right hand, and He does not say it from the doorway, so the hand that is holding me at this hour is the same hand in every hour after it. I am held in this dark.
- Dread, get out of this room, in the name of Jesus, and take tomorrow night's rehearsal with you. The Lord is my Helper, and He said fear not because He was already inside with me, not because He was warning me from somewhere safe. Peace, you belong here, and you are welcome to stay all night.
- Body, you are not in danger from a memory, and you are allowed to come down now. Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace, and this room is Yours before it is ever mine. I thank You, because You are holding my right hand right now, and You are not letting go round the corner.
