Dose At 3AMPsalm 139:12

Dread With Nothing Attached

This message is for fear that arrives with no threat to answer

The wind gets up at about ten past three, and there is no rain in it.

That is the thing about that particular wind. It moves the gate. It presses the window in its frame. It lifts a loose slate somewhere round the back and puts it down again. And it carries not one drop of water. Nothing is coming. The sky over the hill is clear the whole night. It is only air moving in the dark, and by four it will be gone.

She is awake before she knows she is awake.

Her chest is already tight. Her heart is going hard and fast the way it does, her hands have gone cold, and there is a taste at the back of her throat like a coin. Her entire body has stood to arms.

So she does what a body demands in that state, which is to find the threat.

She goes down the list properly. The children are asleep and well, she can hear one of them turning over. Nothing is due. Nobody is angry with her. There is no letter, no result, no call she is dreading. She goes through the whole house of her life, room by room, twice.

And there is nothing there.

That is the part that undoes her. Not the fear. The nothing.

Because a fear you can name is a fear you can answer. If it were the appointment, she could pray about the appointment. If it were money, she could sit at the table and do sums until the sums stopped moving. A named fear gives you something to do with your hands.

This one gives her nothing. It has made no claim. It has brought no evidence. It has simply arrived, filled her from the sternum outward, and said nothing at all, and there is no argument on earth you can make to a thing that has not spoken.

And by twenty to four the second fear has arrived, and this one is worse, because this one is about her. What is wrong with me. Other people sleep. There is nothing happening and I am terrified of it.

Dread With Nothing Attached

One thing is true at this hour, and it is enough

I am not going to try to talk you out of anything, because you are not in an argument. At three in the morning nobody has ever been reasoned out of a body that is braced. You do not need a case. You need one true thing, small enough to hold in a hand that is shaking.

Here it is.

If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night, even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.Psalm 139:11 and 12

Hear the middle of that again, with your eyes shut. Even the darkness is not dark to Him.

You are lying in a room where you cannot see the ceiling, and He is looking at the same room and it is noon. There is no low light where He is. There is no shape in the corner that He cannot make out. The dark is not a place He enters carefully. The dark is not a place at all to Him.

And that means something very specific for a fear with nothing attached.

Your fear has no name and no shape, and you cannot see it, and that is exactly why it has this power over you. You are searching a dark room for a thing you cannot describe. But the room is not dark to Him. Whatever is actually in your night, He has already seen it in full daylight, and He is not braced, and He is not searching, and He has not moved.

Now let me name the pit, because I will not step over it.

There is a shame in this hour that nobody talks about. It is the shame of having no reason. If your child were ill, you would have somewhere to put this. If there were a diagnosis in the house, people would understand. But there is nothing to point at, so you have started to believe the fear is a verdict on you: that a stronger person would not do this, that a person with real faith would sleep.

Hear me, quietly and completely. Your body doing this is not a failure of your faith.

The prophet Elijah, straight off the highest day of his life, went out into the wilderness and asked to die. Heaven's answer was not a rebuke and it was not a sermon. He was fed, and he was let sleep, and he was fed again, and only after all of that did anyone say a word to him. God treated an exhausted body as an exhausted body. He did not treat it as a sin.

So we are not going to fix your whole life at ten to four. We are going to take one dose, and it is going to be small on purpose, because small is what is possible at this hour and small is not lesser.

The breakthrough

So here, in the dark, with your eyes closed and nothing solved, this is the turn.

You are not going to find the threat, because there is not one to find, and the searching is what is keeping your body at arms. Stop searching. Not by force. Just let the list go unfinished.

And take hold of the one thing instead. He is here. He sees this room in daylight. You are not alone in this dark.

That is the whole dose. It is not a small faith. It is the right size for the hour.

And one more thing, said plainly, because it matters more than anything else in this message. If your nights have gone past this into thoughts of not being here at all, tell a real human being tonight. If you are in the United States, you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and a person who loves you and will stay on the phone. That is not weak faith. That is wisdom, and God is fully in it.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, even in a whisper, even badly. The authority in them is not something you have to feel: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, because you belong to Him and He is in you. What He does with this hour is His to decide, and He is not waiting for you to be calm before He is present.

  1. Fear, you have arrived with no threat in your hand, and you do not get this house. The Word of God says even the darkness is not dark to Him and the night shines like the day, so what has no name in the dark has no cover in the dark. Peace, you belong here, and this room is yours.
  2. Chest, you are loosening in the name of Jesus, because the God who is in this room is not startled. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, therefore Jesus, You are welcome here at three in the morning. What He holds does not shake.
  3. Three in the morning, you are not my enemy. God, You are awake in this hour and I am not alone in this dark, so this hour belongs to the One who made it. I am kept, and the keeping does not need a reason.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
