Dose For ShameRomans 8:1

Forgiven And Still Flinching

This message is for shame that survived the forgiveness

There is a room she can still walk through with her eyes closed.

Small. A back room off a hall, the kind that always smells faintly of hot dust from an old heater. Two chairs at an angle, not facing each other, which she noticed at the time and has thought about since, because whoever arranged them knew what they were doing. A window too high to see out of. A stack of folded chairs against the wall, and on the sill, a mug with a dried ring in the bottom that somebody had meant to wash.

She was twenty six. She said the thing out loud for the first time in that room, all of it, in the order it actually happened, without the softening she had used every other time she had rehearsed it. And the person in the other chair did not move away. Did not gasp, did not manage a face. Just listened, and then said the words, and then prayed about eleven of them, and then asked if she wanted tea.

She was forgiven in that room. Genuinely, completely, by God, and she knew it at the time, and she has never once doubted it since.

She is fifty one now. And last month somebody said a name in a shop and her whole body went hot from the collarbone up, and she was back in it, all of it, in half a second, and she had to stand very still in front of the tinned goods until it passed.

That is the thing nobody warned her about. The forgiveness took. The flinch stayed.

Beloved, I think you have a room like that. And I think you have been quietly confused for years about why a thing that was truly dealt with still has this much reach.

Forgiven And Still Flinching

Two different things, and only one of them was ever canceled

Let me name what you have been living with, because you have never had language for it and the lack of language is half the weight.

Guilt says: I did a thing. Shame says: I am a thing. They arrive together and they feel identical, and when the forgiveness came through it settled the first one entirely and the second one simply carried on trading, because nobody served it any papers.

So you have the strange, exhausting life of a forgiven person who still braces. You hear a name and go hot. You avoid one street. You have a version of your own history that you keep for other people, edited, and every time you tell it you feel like a con artist even though every word of it is true. You get on well with people who do not know, and you cannot fully relax with the ones who do. And underneath the whole thing runs a sentence you have never said aloud: they say it is dealt with, but they did not see it.

Hear me. That sentence is a lie, and I want you to notice which part of it is the lie. Not the last clause. The last clause is the only wrong one. He saw it. All of it, in order, without the softening, before you ever found language for it, and He did not move away.

That is what makes this forgiveness different from every human one you have received. A human forgives what they were told. He forgave what He watched.

Now means now

Here is the ground.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

Take that word now and hold it, because your whole trouble lives in the timing.

Not there was. Not there shall be, once enough time has passed and you have been good for long enough and the memory has finally faded. Now. In the shop, in front of the tinned goods, with your face hot and your history playing at full volume behind your eyes, there is no condemnation, and it is exactly as true in that second as it was in the back room twenty five years ago.

And notice where it is located. To them which are in Christ Jesus. That is a position, not a performance. The verdict is not attached to how you feel about yourself this afternoon; it is attached to where you are standing, and you are standing in Him, and He is not going to move to make you feel more accurate.

Which means the flinch is not evidence. It is not a message from God. It is not the truth leaking through. It is a body doing what bodies do with a thing it once had to survive, and it has no legal standing whatsoever, and it has been squatting in a house that changed hands a quarter of a century ago.

You are not being reminded. You are being harassed. And there is a difference between conviction and condemnation that you can learn to hear in one breath: conviction is specific and it hands you somewhere to go, and it always comes with a door in it. Condemnation is vague and it hands you a verdict about who you are and no door at all. One of them is God, and the other one has never once been Him.

The breakthrough

So serve the notice.

Not later, when you feel differently about yourself. Feelings are the last thing to hear about a change in ownership, and you may well flinch again next month, and that is not a failure of this moment. The eviction does not depend on the shaking stopping. Speak it while you shake.

And hear this clearly, because I will not put one gram of weight on you: nothing about the last twenty five years is a verdict on how you have believed. That the shame stayed is not a sign you did the repentance wrong, or received the forgiveness badly, or lacked something. It has never worked that way for anybody. We carry the burden of getting you into this room. It has never been your job to be strong enough to deserve what is in it.

You do not owe anybody a confession to be free of this. Not a person, not a stage, not a public account. If a wise, safe human being knows your story, that is a good gift and I would not take it from you. But this moment needs nobody but you and God, and the thing does not have to be said out loud to anyone, ever, for what follows to be completely true.

And take it again tomorrow if it comes back. This comes daily, like manna did, and a day you did not take it is not a lapse and not a broken streak. There is no ledger here. Tomorrow's portion is already made.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud. You have every right to, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority here is genuinely yours, delegated and never earned. An ambassador does not invent his message, he carries his King's word into the street, so nothing below is your opinion of yourself, it is the verdict already handed down. And the outcome is His, however He answers, including how long your body takes to catch up.

  1. Shame that outlived my forgiveness, you have no standing in this house and you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and now means now, and I am in Him.
  2. Flinch in my body, you do not get the last word about me. Jesus is my Advocate and He does not argue a case He has already won, so the verdict on me is His, and it is filed, and it is finished.
  3. God, You saw the whole of it before I had the words for it, and You did not move away. I am covered, I am not condemned, and I am free to stand up straight, because what You have finished I do not have to keep paying for.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
