The Morning Of The Appointment

This message is for starting the day that will end with an answer you did not choose

She had been dressed for forty minutes and it was not until eleven.

Coat already over the back of the chair. Keys moved to the bowl by the door last night, so that this morning she would not have to look for them and find out what her hands were doing. Two slices of toast made and going cold, because her hands wanted a job and her stomach did not want the toast. The kettle had boiled twice and she had not poured either one.

She stood at the sink in the half dark and watched the window go from black, to gray, to one thin line of gold along the roofs opposite. And underneath the whole of it, running the way a fridge hums under a sleeping house, was one sentence she never actually said out loud: by tonight, I will know.

That is the thing nobody tells you about a day with an answer in it. It does not begin at eleven. It begins at ten past five, in the dark, with your feet on cold floor and your ribs already set like a person standing in a doorway watching weather come up the road. The appointment takes twenty minutes. The morning takes six hours, and the morning is the part that costs you.

And I am not writing to the person in the waiting room. I am writing to you, standing in your kitchen right now with a cold mug and a coat you put on far too early. Beloved, I know exactly where you are. You are not frightened of the news. You are frightened of the not knowing, and of how long the not knowing has to be carried before somebody in a small room tells you which life you are living now.

The Morning Of The Appointment

The hours are not the enemy

Here is what your body has been doing since five o'clock. It has been rehearsing.

It has run the good version. It has run the bad version. It has run the version where they say the words gently and you have to hold your face still, and it has run the version where you have to ring somebody afterwards and say it out loud for the first time, and it has decided which chair in that room you will be sitting in when it happens. You have lived this appointment eleven times already this morning, and every one of those eleven times cost you something real, and none of them was the actual one.

That is not a character flaw. That is a body trying to protect you from a shock by taking the shock in installments. It is love, badly aimed. And it does not work, because grief cannot be paid in advance, and neither can joy.

So let me tell you the thing I most want you to have this morning, and I want to say it plainly before anything else.

You have already been given today. Not the answer. Today. And they are two different gifts.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 to 23

Read where that was written from. That is not a sunny verse. That is a man sitting in the wreckage of a burned city, writing a book of poems about a catastrophe that has already happened, the very worst thing he could have imagined, and it did not spare him, and he had no good answer coming. And out of the middle of it he says this: they are new every morning.

Not they will be. Are. There was a mercy issued for that morning, in that rubble, with nothing fixed and nothing explained, and it arrived on time and it was enough for that day and no more. Which is the whole design. Mercy comes in day sized portions because we are day sized people, and He will not hand you a week of grace at five in the morning when what you need is six hours of it.

You are not short on strength for eleven o'clock. You do not need eleven o'clock's grace yet. You are being asked to receive twenty past six, and then twenty five past six, and He is not late with a single one of them.

The one thing that is already settled

Beloved, hear me. There is an answer coming today that you did not choose. And there is an answer that was settled long before this morning got out of bed, and nobody in any room is going to revise it.

You are His. That was decided at a cross, in public, at cost, and it is not on today's agenda. Whatever is said to you at eleven, you will walk out of that building belonging to the same God you walked in belonging to, held by the same hands, with the same Jesus who never once let go of anybody in the middle of hard news.

That is what changes the morning. Not knowing the outcome. Knowing the Keeper.

And a keeper who does not sleep does not need you awake at five, doing His job badly. He was awake at five anyway. He was already in eleven o'clock before you were, and He will be in tonight, and in tomorrow morning when the world has a new shape, and the mercy for that morning is already made and already dated.

The breakthrough

So put the mug down and stop rehearsing.

Not because rehearsing is wicked. Because you are spending grace that was made for living on a scene that has not happened, and you will need it later, and there is a better use for the next twenty minutes than dying eleven small deaths in your own kitchen.

You are not walking into today. You are being carried into it. Say it out loud in this room, right now, while the light is still coming up: this hour has a Keeper, and it is not me.

And hear this, because I will not have one word of mine leave a bruise on you. Nothing that is said in that room today is a verdict on how you have believed. Not one syllable of it. If you have been shaking since five, you are not failing. You are a human being with news coming, and Jesus sweated in a garden the night before His, and nobody has ever called Him faithless for it. We carry this with you. You do not have to be strong to be held.

Keep the appointment. Ask every question you meant to ask. Take the people who love you with you if they can come. God works through ordinary rooms and ordinary hands and He has never once been embarrassed by them.

And before you stand up, take the morning back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own kitchen, in your own voice. You can, and here is why: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this authority is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. An ambassador does not make policy, he carries his King's word into the street, so you are only ever saying back what God has already said. And you say it under His will, not over it. He may answer today however He chooses, and the outcome is His, and your standing does not move an inch either way.

  1. Morning, you do not get to decide what I am today. The Word of God says His mercies are new every morning, and I am starting this day out of the hands of God and not out of the hour that is coming.
  2. Dread of the answer I did not choose, get out of my kitchen in the name of Jesus. God is my Keeper and He does not sleep on the keeping, so the hour holding that news is an hour He is already holding.
  3. Jesus, You are the Keeper of my going out and my coming in, and I am held today, not braced. I am carrying what You have given me for this morning and nothing else, because what You have finished, I do not have to start.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
