The Lie That Is Still Standing

This message is for an untruth still believed by people who matter

The wind got up around six and it has been throwing the hedge about ever since, and she has been standing at the end of her own drive for eleven minutes with the car keys in her hand.

There is a light on in the front room. There are four people in there who love her. There is a dish on the passenger seat going cold and she is going to have to walk in with it in a minute and she cannot make her feet go.

Because of a sentence.

She said it nine years ago in a kitchen, and it was not a large lie, and if you laid it out flat on a table now you would probably say it was barely one. She let a thing stand that was not true, about why she had not been there, about what she had been doing, and it was easier, and everyone believed it, and everyone still believes it.

And that would be survivable, except for what happened next, which is what happens to every lie that is not put down early. It settled in. It became furniture. People arranged other things around it. Somebody told the story again at a wedding, kindly, as an example of what she is like, and everyone laughed warmly and looked at her with affection, and she smiled, and something in her chest folded up small and has stayed folded ever since.

That is the part nobody talks about. She is not tortured by guilt every hour of the day. She is loved, constantly, for a version of an event that did not happen. And every time she is loved for it, it grows.

The wind is cold now. She has got to go in. She is going to walk into a room full of people she loves carrying a dish and a lie, and she has been doing it for nine years, and it is the loneliest thing in her life.

And now I am going to stop saying she.

Because you have a sentence too. It might be a thing you said, or a thing you let stand, or a version of yourself that got built and you never corrected. And you have got very good at living inside it, and you cannot see any exit that does not bring the roof down on people who do not deserve it.

I am not going to ask you to bring the roof down. Stay with me.

The Lie That Is Still Standing

There are two ways to cover a thing

There is a psalm that begins with one of the happiest lines in the whole book, and it was written by a man who had spent about a year with a very large lie standing in a very public place.

It opens like this: blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Hold that word. Then look at what he says a few lines later, describing the year before.

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.Psalm 32:5

Read those two side by side and you will see the thing that sets people free, and almost nobody notices it.

Blessed is the one whose sin is covered. I did not cover my iniquity.

The same idea, twice, pointing in opposite directions. And the difference is not the word. The difference is whose hands are doing it.

There is a covering you do. It is the one you have been doing for nine years. You know its weight exactly: it has to be maintained, it has to be remembered, it changes what you can say at a table and which stories you can be in the room for, and it never actually covers anything, it just moves the shape around under the cloth. Everything you cover with your own hands stays exactly where it is, forever, and costs you rent every month.

And there is a covering He does. It is the word used for the lid on the ark in the holiest place, the same root as the day the whole nation waited for once a year. It does not hide a thing. It settles it. What He covers is not concealed, it is finished.

And the entrance to the second one is the exact opposite of the first. You get His covering by uncovering. Not to the room. To Him. I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover it, and the moment that happened, the sentence turns and it is God doing the verbs from there on. You forgave. Past tense. Done in the time it takes to say it.

Now hear the thing I suspect you have been braced for since the second paragraph, and hear that it is not coming.

Nobody here is going to tell you that you have to walk into that front room tonight and say it out loud. That is not the price of your release and it never was. What you do about the people in that house is a real question, and it has real answers, and some of them are wise and some of them would do damage to people who have done nothing wrong, and it will take counsel and time and probably somebody who knows your whole situation. It is not tonight's question. Anyone who makes God's forgiveness conditional on your handling of the human end has quietly turned grace into a payment plan, and it is not one.

Tonight's question is only this: who holds the record.

Because that is the loneliness, if you look at it properly. It is not the fear of being found out. It is that you are known by everyone you love in a way that is not true, and so there is nobody alive who is loving the actual you. That is a real famine and you have been in it for nine years.

And there is one Person for whom the lie has never worked, not once, not for a second. He has known the whole thing the entire time. He has never held a false version of you and had to be corrected. And here is the sentence I want to put in your hands and leave there: He knew the whole of it, and He never once left.

You are not loved by Him for a story. You are loved with the file open.

The breakthrough

So here is what is on the table tonight.

Take your hands off the lid.

Not in front of them. In front of Him, where it has always been visible anyway. Name the thing once, silently, in your own plain words, without the version you have been telling. Do not perform it, do not grovel over it, do not go round it eleven times. He is not squeamish and He is not surprised and He has been waiting to be allowed to do this the whole time.

And the moment your hands come off it, His go on it. That is the whole mechanism. What you cover stays. What He covers is settled. You do not have to earn your way out of this, you do not have to feel bad enough for long enough, and there is no queue.

You are not what you did in a kitchen nine years ago. You are covered, and you are not condemned now, and tonight you can walk into a room carrying a dish and nothing else.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, alone if that is easier. In Christ this standing is yours, and it is not something you have to establish: you are not pleading a case, you are agreeing with a verdict that has already been entered in your favor. What happens next with the people in your life belongs to Him and to wise counsel, and the outcome is His.

  1. Shame, you do not get to hold the pen, because the record you are reading from has already been settled. Scripture says I acknowledged my sin to God and He forgave the iniquity of my sin, so what I uncovered to Him is what He covered Himself. I am covered, and I am not condemned now.
  2. Lie that is still standing, you are not my name, and you do not describe me to God, in the name of Jesus. The Lord is the one who has known the whole of it from the first day and has never once left the room, and He has never held a false version of me that needed correcting. I am known truly, and I am kept.
  3. God, You are the Father who covers what is handed over, and I hand this over now. I am not what I did, and I put down a verdict You have already answered. What He has covered, I do not have to keep holding.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
