The rain came on hard about a mile back and he has not turned the wipers on since he stopped.
The engine is off. The glass has gone to water, streaming and re-streaming, and through it the house at the end of the row is a smear of yellow where somebody has left the hall light on. He is not looking at it exactly. He is looking through it, the way you look at a thing you have promised yourself you do not look at.
He drove this way by accident the first time. That was a while ago now, and he has stopped calling it an accident.
He is not here for her. There is nothing to say and it would not be right to say it. He is here because this is the only place where the thing is the actual size it is. Everywhere else it has a shape he can manage. At work it is a fact on a form. With his brother it is a subject they steer round. In the small hours it is a shape on the ceiling with no edges. Here, with the rain going and the hall light on, it is exactly what it is, which is a house he used to live in and does not, because of a decision he made and signed.
And here is the sentence he says, in that car, with the rain going. Not out loud. He has never said it out loud in his life.
I am the kind of man who did that.
Not I did a hard thing. Not even I did a wrong thing, which he could have taken somewhere and set down. What he has done is turn the event into a species. He has made it a name. And a name is something you cannot repent of, because it does not go anywhere. It comes with you into the car.
You may not have a car and a hall light. You might have a photograph you do not delete, or a road you take the long way round, or an anniversary that arrives every year and does not need a diary. But if you ended a marriage and you have been quietly serving a sentence for it since, you know the exact weight of that sentence, and you have been carrying it into every room you enter.
I want to speak to that, and I am not going to be clumsy with it.

I am not going to retry your case
Let me say plainly what I am not doing, because you are braced for both of the usual moves.
I am not going to tell you it was fine. You did not come here for a stranger to be breezy about the most serious thing you have ever done, and if I waved it off you would rightly stop trusting a word I said. Covenant is not small to God. He made it the picture of how He loves, so its breaking is never nothing, and I am not going to insult you by pretending otherwise.
And I am not going to tell you what it was, either. I do not know your file. I do not know what was done to you in that house, or what you tried for how long, or how many people told you to stay, or whether there was danger in the room. Some of you left something that should never have been survived a day longer. Some of you left something you might have stayed in and have wondered ever since. Most of you are carrying a mixture with no clean line down the middle of it. I am not seated to sort that, and neither is anybody who has been sorting it for you at family gatherings.
So I am going to do the only useful thing, which is to take you to the one court that has jurisdiction, and tell you what it has already ruled.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1
Three words in that sentence are doing enormous work, and you have been reading past all three.
Now. Not eventually. Not when enough years have passed, not when the children are settled, not when you have proved you are a good person again by being useful for a decade. Now is a word about this evening, in this car, with the rain going.
No. Not less. Not manageable. Paul does not write that there is a reduced sentence for people in Christ, or that the condemnation has been suspended pending good behavior. There is none. That is a total word and he chose it deliberately.
Condemnation. This is the one that will free you if you let it. The word is a verdict, a judicial sentence pronounced against a person. Which means the thing you have been feeling in that car has a name, and the name is not conviction. Conviction is specific, it is about a deed, and it walks you toward God with something in your hands. What you have is a standing sentence against your identity, and it has never once walked you anywhere except back to that street.
Conviction says this was wrong, bring it. Condemnation says you are wrong, stay out there. Only one of them is from God, and the one in the car has never had His signature on it.
And here is the part that closes the door on the whole system. The reason there is no condemnation is not that the matter was minor. It is that the matter was carried. Whatever in that marriage was genuinely yours, and you know better than I do what was, was taken to a cross by somebody who was not asking to be reimbursed. Not waved away. Carried. There is a difference, and the difference is everything, because a thing waved away leaves you suspecting it will come back, and a thing carried is gone from your hands because it is in someone else's.
You have been paying an invoice that is stamped.
So here is the turn, and it is smaller than the years you have spent on this.
Stop appealing. You have been running an appeal in a court that already ruled, and every night that you are not free is not evidence against you, it is just an appeal that was never going to be heard because the case is closed.
Bring the true thing. Not the polished version, and not the version that is mostly about what they did. The actual thing, in the actual words. If you have never said it in plain language, that is not because you are hard, it is because you have been afraid that saying it makes it real, and it was already real, and it was already carried.
And hear this, because the shame has been telling you otherwise. You do not have to confess this to a person to be free of it. There is no human being whose face you must see, no phone call that has to be made tonight, no permission you need to go and get from a family member who has an opinion. God may lead you to a wise person for the walking out of it, and if He does that will be an ordinary kindness rather than a toll, and there are good and gentle counselors in the world for exactly this. But the freedom is not gated behind anybody's forgiveness but His, and He has already given His.
You are not what you did. You are covered.
Declare this over yourself
Speak it over the thing you just named. You are allowed to, not because the wording has power, but because you are in Christ and that standing was given to you, not lent to you on your good years. And speak it with the outcome open in your hand: God may work this out in His own way and in His timing, and a heavy Tuesday next week is never the verdict returning.
- Shame, you are not my keeper and you do not get to sit at this table. The Word of God says there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and now is a word about tonight rather than a word about later. Leave this house, in the name of Jesus.
- Marriage I ended, you are not the name I am carried under. Whatever in it was truly mine was carried by Christ and not merely waved off, and an account that has been settled is not still owed. I am covered, and I am not condemned now.
- Lord, You are the God who keeps no record against those who are in Christ, and You never once needed me to finish paying before You came near. The shame I have carried since the day it ended is not the truth about me, and I set it down where it was already taken. I thank You, because Your verdict is the only one with jurisdiction over this life.
