Dose For PainPsalm 73:26

It Outlasted Every Treatment

This message is for pain that is still here after everything that was meant to fix it

There is a box in that house, and everybody who lives there knows not to move it.

It started as one bag from the chemist. Then it needed a shelf. Now it is a shoebox with the lid off, on top of the bookcase where the good crockery used to go, and inside it is the whole history of a body that would not settle. The first thing, the one they were confident about. The second thing, the one with the leaflet folded into eighths. The blue tube that was going to change everything. The heat pad with the frayed cord. The exercise sheet with the little drawings of a person doing a stretch, three weeks of ticks down the margin and then no ticks at all. A supplement somebody at work swore by. A brace. A different brace.

It is not a box of failure. That is what a stranger would call it. It is a box of hope, one item per attempt, each one bought on a day when somebody stood in a shop and thought, maybe this.

And under the box is a person who has stopped saying the word out loud, and who has learned to change the subject with a small laugh, and who woke this morning to the same thing that woke her yesterday, in the same place, at the same weight, after everything.

Beloved, I know you can hear the box from where you are sitting. You have one. It might not be a box. It might be a drawer, or an app with a graph in it, or a list of names and dates that you could recite in your sleep. And you are so tired. Not the tired that sleep touches. The other one.

It Outlasted Every Treatment

What it took while nobody was counting

Let me name the low place first, because you have had the high things said over you for years by people who meant every word, and they have stopped landing, and I am not going to pretend I do not know why.

It is not only the pain. It is the erosion.

It is the fact that you plan your week around one bad afternoon. It is the invitation you say yes to and then lie awake costing. It is the way you have learned to sit down without a sound, and stand up without a sound, so that nobody in the room looks over. It is the birthday you got through on willpower and paid for across three days that nobody attributed to the birthday. It is having become an expert in something you never wanted to study.

And it is the newest thing, the one you have not told anybody, which is this: you have started to be careful about hoping. Because hope has a cost now. Every new thing in that box was a small resurrection you attended, and every one of them asked you to believe for six weeks and then handed the day back to you unchanged, and somewhere in there your heart decided it could not keep paying the entry fee.

That is not weak faith. That is a wound in the exact place where faith is normally held, and I am not going to stand on it. We carry that. You do not.

The thing pain does that nobody names

Here is what I want to take off you this morning, and it is not the pain. It is what the pain has been quietly doing for years while everyone was busy treating it.

Pain has been trying to tell you who you are.

It has been at it a long time. It named your calendar first, then your job, then the version of you that your children describe to their friends. And lately it has been reaching for the last thing, the deep thing, the sentence underneath: this is what I am now. A body that does not work. A problem people manage. A person who used to.

That is a lie, and it is a lie with a very long run at you, and today it stops having the naming rights.

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.Psalm 73:26

Look at how honest that is. He does not say his flesh is fine. He does not say a believer's body holds up. He says it plainly, out loud, in a song the whole nation sang: my flesh fails. My heart fails. The word is not softened for the congregation.

And then, in the same breath, with no gap and no apology, he says God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.

Not instead of the failing. Alongside it. The failing is real and the portion is real and the portion is the longer of the two. That verse is a man holding two true things in the same hand without dropping either, and if you have been feeling like a fraud for hurting and hoping at once, hear this: that is not double mindedness. That is the psalm.

Your portion is not your body. Your portion is a Person, and He is for ever, and the box on the bookcase has no jurisdiction over Him at all.

The breakthrough

So take your hand off the box, and put it on the place that hurts.

Not as a technique. As a claim. That is the ground pain has been occupying and calling its own, and you are going there in person, with the King's word in your mouth, to say who it actually belongs to.

Hear me carefully, because I will not put one gram of weight on you that I am not willing to carry myself. Nothing about the last five years is a verdict on how you have believed. Nothing. Not the treatments that did not hold, not the mornings you could not pray, not the hoping you had to ration. It has never once worked that way for anybody, and any voice that has been telling you otherwise has been lying to you in a kind tone.

Keep every appointment you have. Take what you have been given to take. Stay in the care of the people looking after your body, because God gives real gifts through ordinary hands and He is not in competition with a heat pad. Nothing here replaces any of that, and I would not have you step back one inch from it.

And while you keep all of it, take the naming rights back. Today, and again tomorrow, and again the day after, the way manna came: a portion for the day, gathered fresh, never hoarded. If you miss a day, there is no streak to break and nothing to make up. Tomorrow's is already made.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, hand where it hurts. You are allowed to, and here is the ground it stands on: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this authority is genuinely yours, handed down and not invented. An ambassador never announces his own policy, he carries his King's word into the street, so every line here is only God's own word said back. And it is spoken under His will and never over it. He answers as He chooses, in His own way, and the outcome is His, and your standing with Him does not move a millimetre either way.

  1. Pain that outlasted every treatment, you are not my owner and you do not get to name me. God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever, and a portion that lasts for ever is not decided by a body that has been hurting since March.
  2. Body, you belong to God and you are being ministered to right now, in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says my flesh and my heart fail, and in the very same breath it says He does not, so I am receiving from the One who does not fail.
  3. Jesus, You are my Healer and my portion, and I take this today and again tomorrow. I am not holding this on my own, because You have been carrying it since before it had a name.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
