Dose While WaitingHabakkuk 2:3

The Promise That Outlasted Its Season

This message is for holding a word that has run past every reasonable timeline

She can still describe the room.

Brown carpet with a worn track from the door to the window. A radiator that ticked. Somebody's coat over the back of a chair because the hooks were full, and outside, a wet Tuesday in the sort of month nobody writes songs about. She was twenty-six. She was sitting on the second row from the back with her hands in her sleeves, and God said something to her.

Not audibly. She has never claimed that. But she has also never once doubted that it happened, which is the part that has become so inconvenient. Because if it had been a wobble, a bit of enthusiasm she talked herself into, she could have let it go years ago and been fine.

It was a word about her life. It was specific. And she was so certain of it that she wrote the date in the front of a book she still owns.

That was a long time ago now.

Nothing about it has happened. Not part of it, not a version of it, not an approximation she could squint at and call a fulfillment. And she has passed, over the years, through every station on that line. First the excitement. Then the sensible waiting. Then the slightly harder waiting where she started calculating whether it was still possible. Then the season of rewriting it, trying on smaller interpretations to see whether one of them fitted, so that it could count as done and she could stop. Then the year she stopped talking about it entirely, because there is a look people give you.

And now, quietly, this. She still believes He said it. She just does not know what to do with a person who believes something that has outlived every reasonable timeline it could have had.

If you have one of these, you know that nobody in your life can help you with it, and I know why. To your friends it is either a thing that will happen, which they cannot promise, or a thing that will not, which they will not say. So they say nothing, and you carry it by yourself.

You are safe here. And I am not going to promise you a date, because I do not have one and neither does anybody who tells you they do.

The Promise That Outlasted Its Season

The word has an appointment you were never shown

There is a man in Scripture who stood on a wall and complained to God about exactly this, and what is remarkable is that God did not tell him off for it.

Habakkuk was watching a promise go the wrong way. Not slowly. Wrongly. Everything visible was moving in the opposite direction to everything he had been told. He said so, out loud, in language a lot blunter than most of us would risk. And the answer he got has become the sentence that people in your situation have stood on for thousands of years:

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.Habakkuk 2:3

Notice what God does and does not do there.

He does not give a date. He never does. And I want you to feel the mercy in that rather than the frustration, because a date would have made you a person waiting for a day instead of a person walking with a Person, and He is not willing to be reduced to a delivery service with a tracking number.

What He does give is a word that has almost gone missing from English: appointed. The vision is for an appointed time. Which means there is a time, and it is set, and it is set by Someone, and the fact that you have not been shown it does not mean it does not exist. Your calendar has a blank where His has an entry.

And then He says the strangest thing in the sentence. Though it tarry. God Himself names the delay. He does not deny it, minimize it, or reframe it as your impatience. He says: yes, it is late by your reckoning, and it is still coming.

That matters more than anything else here, so let me put it plainly. The delay is not evidence that you heard wrong. The delay is not a verdict on your faith, your obedience, your prayer life, or your worthiness to have been told something in the first place. Nowhere in this passage does God say the tarrying is Habakkuk's fault, and nowhere in your life is He saying it is yours.

Now, the honest part, because I will not hand you a comfort with a hole in it.

I do not know what God is going to do with your word or when. He may bring it in a shape you would not have recognized in that brown-carpeted room. He may do something else entirely that turns out to be the better thing, and He is not obliged to explain the difference to you in advance. That is His to decide, and His timing is not a puzzle you failed to solve.

What is not in question is Him. Not one thing He has ever said has fallen to the ground unfulfilled somewhere between His mouth and the world. He is not a man that He should lie. And the thing you are actually standing on is not the promise. It is the character of the One who made it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not what you have been bracing for.

We are not going to work out what God meant. We are not going to reinterpret the word smaller so it can be marked as delivered, and we are not going to inflate your certainty into a demand with a date attached to it. Both of those are ways of taking the appointment out of His hands and putting it into yours, and you have been tired for years partly because you have been trying to run a diary that was never yours.

Instead, you are going to put the word down where it belongs, which is in front of Him, and then you are going to stand on the only thing that has been steady the whole time.

Not the timeline. The One who spoke.

And if today all you can manage is to say the date out loud and stop, that is a full portion and it counts. There is another one tomorrow. You cannot save these up and you do not need to, because the God who fed a whole nation one morning at a time has never yet run out of mornings.

Declare this over yourself

This is not you extracting a schedule from God. Because you are in Christ, the authority to speak over your own waiting is yours, delegated, exercised in His name, and it does not depend on your certainty being at full strength today. What He does with the promise, and when, is His to decide, and His timing is not a lock you have failed to open. What you are settling right now is who you are standing on while it tarries.

  1. Someday, get out of my house. The Word of God says the vision is for an appointed time and at the end it speaks and does not lie, so what I carry has a time on it that heaven keeps and my calendar does not. I hold what He said, and He holds me.
  2. Word that God spoke over me, you are not expired and you do not answer to my timeline. In the name of Jesus I stand on what the Lord said, and what He has said is the ground under my feet, not a debt He has forgotten. Jesus, You are the God who cannot lie, and I hold this now.
  3. Silence, you are not an answer and you are not a verdict on me. Scripture says though it tarry, wait for it, therefore this waiting is company and not abandonment, and I am held inside it. Father, You keep appointments I have never been shown, and I take my steadiness from You now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
