The hose has been running onto the same patch of ground for twenty minutes and the water is going sideways.
He stands there in the last of the evening watching it happen. It should not be possible. There is water, plenty of it, more than that ground has had all summer, and it is running off the top of it and along the path and away into the drain by the gate, and the soil two inches down is the color of a paving slab.
He has done everything right. That is what makes it stupid. He has watered it. He has watered it a lot.
And he is thinking about the week he has just had off.
Because he took the week. He actually took it, which is not nothing, and he slept, genuinely slept, ten hours the first night and nine the next. He did not check anything. He walked. He read most of a book. His wife said on the Thursday that his face looked different, and it did, and he felt something loosen in the back of his neck for about a day and a half.
He went back on the Monday and by ten past nine it was as if the week had not happened at all.
He is standing in his own garden watching good water refuse to go into hard ground and he is having a thought he has been avoiding for about a year: what if rest is not the thing that fixes this. Because he has tried it, properly, more than once, and every time he comes back up to the same reading. Not sad. Not ill. Not grieving anything. Empty, the way a room is empty, and the emptiness has stopped responding to sleep.
And now I am going to stop saying he.
Because you have taken your week too, or you have promised yourself one, and some part of you already knows that when it comes it will not touch this. You are not lazy and you have not stopped caring. You are the person everybody still relies on, and you are running on something that ran out a while ago, and you cannot find the bottom of it because there is no bottom, there is just a hole.
I am not going to tell you to rest harder.

He does not restore your strength, He gives His
There is a line in Isaiah that people quote at exhausted people all the time, and it usually lands as a demand. It is not one. It is the opposite of one, and the exact wording matters.
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.Isaiah 40:29
Take the two halves apart.
The first half: He gives power to the faint. The word for faint is a word for a person whose energy has gone, who is drooping, who has nothing.
The second half is the one that does the work. To him who has no might. In the Hebrew this is even blunter than English can carry. It is not low on strength. It is closer to the one with nothing at all, zero, absence. And to that person, the verse says, He multiplies might.
Now sit with the arithmetic, because it is the whole message. You cannot multiply nothing by rest. Zero multiplied by a week off is still zero, and every one of us has done that sum with our own life and been baffled by the answer. The verse is not offering a top-up on your reserves. It is not talking about your reserves at all. It is saying that God brings a strength that is His and puts it into a person who has none, and the giving is the source of it, not the person receiving.
Look at the verb. He gives. Not He restores. Not He helps you rebuild. Not He rewards the ones who rested well. He gives.
And in the desert, the same shape again. Nobody in that camp ever recovered from a stronger position. They started every day at nothing, and every day it was given, and the whole system was designed so that no one could ever say they had built up a reserve. The strength was never in the person. It was on the ground, and it came from Him.
So here is what has been happening to you, and it is not a moral failure.
You have been trying to refill a container. That is the model you were handed, probably by well-meaning people: work drains you, rest fills you, keep the balance and you will be fine. It works for a while. It does not work for what you have got, because what you have got is not an empty container, it is dry ground, and dry ground does not fill, it soaks, and it soaks slowly, and it soaks from a source that keeps running while you do nothing at all.
The man in the garden worked this out eventually, and the answer was not more water. He put the hose down on its side in the middle of the bed, turned the tap almost off, and left it there overnight, running so slowly it barely made a sound. He went to bed. He did nothing. In the morning the ground was dark two feet down.
He did not water the garden that night. He got out of the way of the water.
That is what is being offered to you, and there is nothing in it for you to perform. God is not asking a depleted person to generate anything. He is not asking you to try harder, and if any voice in your head is currently saying this is your own fault for not managing yourself better, that voice is not His and you may stop paying it rent.
So here is what is on the table, and it asks nothing of you.
You are not going to be scolded here. Not for the flatness, not for the week that did not work, not for the fact that you cannot feel anything about a God you genuinely love. The depleted do not need a lecture and they do not need a project. You need a supply that is not yours, and it is being poured, slowly, into ground that has gone hard, right now, while you do nothing at all.
His strength is not on loan to you. It is given. And it is given to the one with none, which is the entrance requirement you already meet.
One thing more, and it matters. Tell one person this week that you are running on empty. Not the whole thing, just the fact of it. And if the flatness ever goes as far as not wanting to be here at all, say that out loud to a human being tonight, not tomorrow. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line will answer. Keep whatever care you already have. Reaching for a person is not the opposite of receiving from God, it is very often how it arrives.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your hands open. In Christ this authority is yours, and it is given to you, not generated by you: you are not talking yourself into strength, you are agreeing with a supply that is already running. And you speak it under His will, because how and when this fills belongs to Him, and the outcome is His.
- Empty, you are not the end of me, and you are not a verdict on my life. God gives power to the faint, and to the one with no might at all He increases strength, which means He starts exactly where I am and not where I keep pretending to be. I am carried when I cannot carry.
- Strength that is not mine, come in, in the name of Jesus, because these hands are open and there is nothing in them that is mine to give. The Lord is my Shepherd, and a shepherd carries the one that cannot walk rather than lecturing it about walking. I stop refilling what He intends to fill.
- Rest that gives nothing back, you are not my source, and I take my hands off you tonight. Jesus, You are the one who gives to the faint, and I receive Your strength today and I come back for it tomorrow. What He supplies, I do not have to manufacture.
