The Breath That Will Not Go Down

This message is for air that will not reach the bottom of the lungs

She is sitting on the edge of the bed with both feet on the cold floor, and she is trying again.

In through the nose. Down. Down past the collarbone, past the top of the chest, all the way down to where a breath is supposed to land. And it stops. It stops about a third of the way, the way a drawer stops when something behind it has shifted, and she pulls harder, and it stops in the same place, and now the pulling is the problem as well as the stopping.

She has been at this for fifty minutes. She knows the clock without looking at it because the boiler makes a noise at ten to four and it has not made it yet.

Her hands have gone cold and slightly stupid. There is a band across her ribs like somebody has laced her too tight. She has yawned nine or ten times without any of them working, which is the loneliest small thing about this, that even a yawn will not go all the way down.

And there is the second fear, sitting behind the first one, which nobody warns you about. Not just what is happening. What if it does not stop. What if this is the night it does not stop.

She has not woken the person beside her. She has done that before, twice, and both times ended with a kind hand and a cup of tea and a look she cannot bear to be given again.

So she sits on the edge of the bed with her feet on the floor at three in the morning, on her own, working very hard at something everybody else in the house is doing without trying.

That is where you are, or you would not be listening to this at this hour. You do not need to open your eyes for the rest of this. You do not need to read anything or find anything or hold your phone up. Just stay where you are and let me talk to you, because there is one true thing at this hour and it is small enough to carry.

The Breath That Will Not Go Down

The thing you have never once had to make

Start here, and let it be the first thing you hear tonight that is not about what is wrong.

You have never made a single breath.

Not one. Not in your whole life. Not the one you took at four this afternoon when you were carrying the shopping in, not the one you are struggling with now, not the fifteen thousand you took last night while you were unconscious and doing nothing at all. Something in you has been drawing and giving back air the entire time without asking you for a single instruction, and on the nights you slept the best, you had least to do with it.

That is not a comfort I invented for you at three in the morning. It is where the whole story starts.

Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living, breathing being.Genesis 2:7

Look at how close that is. Not a word spoken from a great distance. He knelt down over dust and breathed into its face, and the dust sat up.

So the very first breath that a human being ever had was given, not achieved. It was handed over at close range by a God who came right down to where the dust was. And nothing has changed about the arrangement since. The air in the room tonight is His. The reflex in your chest that keeps working even while you are frightened of it is His. You are not the manufacturer here and you never have been, and the relief in that is the size of the whole night.

Now let me say the thing that has to be said out loud, because you have been half believing the opposite for months.

This is not a failure of faith. It is not a lack of trust, or a sign you did not pray hard enough, or evidence that God has gone quiet on you. Your body has an alarm in it, and tonight the alarm fired at nothing, the way a smoke detector will scream at burnt toast. That is a false alarm and not a moral event, and God is not standing at the end of your bed disappointed about it. Nobody in heaven is filing a report on you tonight.

And here is what you actually have in your hands, small as your hands feel.

You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and that means you have been handed the authority to speak to what is in your room. Not to manufacture calm. Not to feel differently on command. To speak. A mustard seed of faith, said the Lord, spoken to the mountain, and the mountain at this hour is not you and it is not your body. The mountain is the panic, and the panic has been doing all the talking.

So you are going to say something to it, out loud, in the dark, and you are not going to shout. This hour will not carry a shout. It carries a sentence.

Two plain things before we do, and both are part of caring for you properly.

If this chest is new, or the pain is different from the usual, or your arm is involved, ring the doctor or the emergency number where you live. Tonight, not next week. Nothing here ever asks you to sit alone with something that needs a person to look at it.

And if the thought has come tonight that everyone would be better off without you, please reach for a human being before you reach for anything else. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, use your local crisis line or emergency number, and if you do not know it, ring emergency services and ask them. Then think of one person who could sit with you, and ring them too. I would rather you did that than finished this. It is not weakness and it is not a detour, it is the right next thing, and you matter far too much for me to be quiet about it.

The breakthrough

So here it is, and it is deliberately small, because at this hour small is what can be carried.

Keep your eyes shut. Do not sit up straighter, do not fix your posture, do not try to breathe properly. All of that is more work, and you have been working all night.

Put one open hand over your own heart. Let your shoulders be heavy. Then let one breath out slowly, slower going out than it came in, and while it is going out, say the first line below into the dark.

You are not commanding your lungs to perform. You are speaking to the thing that came in without permission and took the loudest chair in the room, and you are doing it in a Name that outranks it. Then you are turning to the One who gave you every breath you have ever had, and thanking Him, out loud, at three in the morning, which is a kind of praise most people never learn.

If nothing shifts tonight, that is not a mark against you. Take it again tomorrow. This is bread for one night at a time, and there is no counting here and nothing to break.

Declare this over yourself

Say them low, out loud, in the dark. In Christ this authority is yours, given to you rather than worked up by you, and it is exercised under His will and never over it: He answers as He sees fit, and you leave the outcome to Him. Speak to the panic, and to the air, and then to the One who gave you the breath in the first place.

  1. Breath, come down. The God who breathed into dust and made a living man is breathing in this room, and lungs that He made know the sound of His voice.
  2. Panic, you are loud and you are not in charge, and in the name of Jesus you are put out of this room tonight. Ribs, you are loosed, because the Prince of Peace is nearer to me at this hour than the fear that woke me.
  3. Lord, You are here at three in the morning, and You have never once been asleep at the keeping of me. I thank You, because every breath I have ever taken came out of Your hand, and this one is coming out of it too.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
