Dose At 3AMIsaiah 41:13

My Body Got There First

This message is for a physical alarm that fires before any thought arrives

His hand is flat on the cold tile before he has decided to put it there.

That is where it starts, and it starts already running. He is sitting on the edge of the bath in the dark with the door shut, because the door being shut is the one thing he can do for the people asleep down the hall. His heart is going like it has somewhere to be. His hands have gone cold and slightly wrong, the way they do. There is a band around his ribs that is tightening in small increments and he has learned not to fight it directly, because fighting it directly makes it worse, and knowing that has never once helped.

And here is the thing that undoes him every time.

Nothing happened.

He was asleep. Then he was awake and it was already going, at full volume, before a single thought had arrived to explain it. He did not think about the meeting. He did not remember the letter. There was no dream he can name. The alarm went off in a house with nobody in it, and now he is sitting on the edge of a bath at ten to three trying to find the fire so that he can put it out, and there is no fire, and that is somehow more frightening than a fire would be.

So he does what he always does. He starts the interrogation. What is wrong with me. Why does this keep happening. Am I doing something to cause this. And underneath those three, quieter and much older, the one that actually does the damage: a person who really trusted God would not be sitting on a bathroom floor at three in the morning.

Now let me stop calling him he.

Because it is your chest. You know the exact sequence: the wrong hands, the band around the ribs, the swallowing, the way the dark seems to have a texture. You know how long it takes, roughly. You know it passes. Knowing that it passes does not help while it is happening, and you have stopped expecting it to.

Do not get up. Do not turn a light on. You do not need to look at anything, and you do not need to do anything with your eyes at all. Just stay where you are and let me talk to you.

My Body Got There First

The watchman at a gate nobody is coming through

Here is the first thing, and I want it in your ears before anything else.

Your body got there first. That is all that happened.

The alarm system in you is older and faster than the part of you that reasons. It does not wait for evidence and it was never designed to. It runs on what it learned, and somewhere behind you there was a season when the night genuinely was dangerous, or the phone genuinely did ring with bad news, or the door genuinely did open the wrong way. Your body took that seriously, exactly as it was built to, and it has kept standing the watch long after the season ended. It is not lying to you. It is doing its job with old information.

That is what three in the morning is. It is a faithful old watchman at a gate that nobody is coming through, and he has not been told, and he does not stand down until somebody tells him.

So let me take one weight off you now, before we go anywhere near a promise. What is happening in your chest is not unbelief taking a physical form. It is not a reading on your trust. There is no line anywhere in the Scriptures that says the person who trusts God sleeps easy and the person who does not wakes with a tight chest, and anyone who told you that has never sat where you are sitting.

Now let me tell you who is in the room.

There is a passage where God speaks to a people who are frightened and scattered and a long way from anything familiar. He does not correct their theology. He does not ask them to calm down first. He does something far more physical than that.

For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.Isaiah 41, verse 13

Listen to what is actually being described there, because it is not a doctrine. It is a hand.

He does not say I will send you a principle to hold on to. He says He takes hold of the right hand. That is the grip of somebody sitting on the edge of the bed beside a person who cannot get their breath. It is what you do for a child who has woken frightened: you do not begin by explaining. You get hold of the hand, and you say the two things, and you stay.

And the two things He says are exactly the two things you need at ten to three. Fear not. And then, immediately, I will help thee. Not because you have argued yourself into calm. Because He has got you.

Here is the part that changes the whole night, if you let it. Your alarm fires before your thought arrives. You have always experienced that as proof that you are alone with it, because there was nothing in the room yet, not even a reason.

But He got there before your thought did too.

The hand was on your hand before you knew what woke you. The dark did not surprise Him. He was in this room at ten to three the way He was in it at ten to three last week, and He is not waiting for you to be composed before He is willing to be near.

The breakthrough

So here is what is yours right now, in the dark, without opening your eyes.

You are not required to be calm in order to be held. You never were. The grip on your right hand does not loosen when your heart rate goes up, and it is not a reward for a steadier night.

One thing is true at this hour and it holds: He is here, and you are not alone in this dark.

That is the whole of it. It is small on purpose, because at ten to three small is all that can be swallowed, and small is enough. Take it tonight. If tomorrow night comes and you cannot manage even this, nothing is broken and nothing is owed. It is given fresh every night and it cannot be stored up.

One more thing, said plainly and only once. If what is happening tonight is bigger than a tight chest, if some part of you does not want to be here in the morning, please reach a person before you reach anything else. Someone in your house, someone whose number you know by heart, or your local emergency number. In the United States you can call or text 988. That is not a failure of anything at all. It is the right next thing, and I would ask it of anyone I love.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself down. You are speaking from ground that is already under you. The authority to speak to your own night is Christ's, and in Him it has been given to you, so you do not have to feel brave to say a word to this hour. Speak first and feel later, if feeling comes at all tonight. And however He answers, whatever this chest does for the next twenty minutes, the hand holding yours is not up for discussion.

  1. Three in the morning, you are not my enemy and you are not my verdict. The Lord says He holds my right hand and tells me not to fear, so in the name of Jesus this hour belongs to Him and not to my chest.
  2. Alarm in my body, you are early and you are wrong. God did not put this dread in me, and the one who has hold of my right hand is holding it right now while you are still shouting.
  3. God, You have got my right hand in this dark and You are saying to me, do not fear. I thank You, because Your hand reached this hour before my first thought did.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
