The rain starts at about eleven, small and irregular against the glass, more of a tapping than a downpour.
He has just put the light off. He is lying on his back with the duvet at chest height and his eyes open, and for maybe forty seconds it is genuinely fine. The rain is pleasant. The room is dark. He is a man in a bed at the end of a Tuesday.
And then it comes in, the way it always comes in, without knocking.
Not a memory exactly. More like a prosecutor who has been waiting in the hall all day for the room to go quiet. It opens with something from about four years ago. Then it moves to something he said this afternoon, at the door, in a tone that was fine at the time and is not fine now. Then it goes further back, to the thing he does not tell anybody, and it lays that out slowly and in order, with all the details intact, because it always has all the details intact.
He turns onto his side. That does nothing. He turns the pillow over. He thinks about getting up, and does not, because getting up means it wins and he has work in the morning.
And here is what he could never explain to anyone: none of this happens in the daytime. In the daytime he is fine. He is competent, and funny, and he genuinely does not think about any of it. It only ever comes when he is lying down. It waits for horizontal.
If that is your night, you already know the peculiar loneliness of it, which is that there is nobody to tell. You cannot phone someone at eleven and say the courtroom has opened again. And you have probably concluded, somewhere along the line, that a person who gets accused every night must be a person with something to answer for.
You are safe here. The light is off, you do not have to look at anything, and I am not going to ask you to think hard. Just let this be a voice in the room while you lie there.

The case was closed and it keeps being reopened
Let us start with the timing, because the timing is the tell.
Conviction and accusation are two different things, and they sound almost identical at eleven at night, which is exactly why this has been so hard to get free of. So here is how you tell them apart, and you will recognize it immediately.
Conviction is specific and it comes with a door. It names one thing, it is oddly calm about it, and it always ends up somewhere: put that right, say sorry to that person, stop doing that. It is going somewhere and it wants to take you with it.
Accusation is different. Accusation is a pile. It never names one thing, it names everything, in a heap, out of order, dragging in a sentence from four years ago and a tone from this afternoon and the thing you have already made your peace with twice. It has no door in it. It is not asking you to do anything, because it does not want you to do anything. It wants you to lie there.
And it comes at night for a simple, almost mechanical reason. At night there is nothing you can do. Nobody to phone, nothing to fix, no way to act. It picks the one hour when action is impossible, which tells you plainly that action was never what it was after.
Now hear what God says about the room you are lying in.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8
The word to hold there is only. The Lord only. Not the Lord along with my vigilance. Not the Lord provided I have got through the review first. He alone makes you dwell in safety, and He is doing it right now, while the rain taps the window and while your mind is halfway through a case it has run a hundred times.
And here is the thing the accusation never mentions, and it never mentions it because it cannot survive it: there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Not less condemnation. None. The case that reopens in your bedroom every night was closed at a cross, and it was not closed provisionally, and it does not reopen because you remembered something at eleven.
You are not lying there because you are a person with something to answer for. You are lying there because the answering is already finished and something in the dark keeps handing you a transcript of a trial that ended.
I want to say one more plain thing before we go on, because this category is where I would rather be useful than beautiful. If what visits you at night has gone beyond accusation into a wish not to be here at all, please tell a person. In the United States you can call or text 988 and someone will answer at any hour. Elsewhere, ring your local emergency number or crisis line. And tell one human being you trust, tomorrow, in daylight, out loud. That is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith. It is exactly what I would want somebody to do for me.
So we are going to do one thing tonight, and it is not a defense.
You have been trying to win the case. Every night you go through it, item by item, explaining, contextualizing, arguing your corner in an empty room, and by half past midnight you are exhausted and you have not moved an inch, because a court that has already delivered its verdict does not need your evidence.
Stop defending. There is nothing to defend. The verdict came in a long time ago and it was not guilty, and it was not guilty because of Him and not because of your record.
So instead of answering, you are going to say something. Short, out loud into the dark, and if the pile comes back you do not go through it, you simply say it again. You are not arguing. You are stating whose room this is.
And this is a portion for tonight only. If tomorrow you fall asleep before you get to it, you have missed nothing. If you skip a week, there is nothing to make up. It is here every night, free, and no one anywhere is keeping count.
Declare this over yourself
You are not pleading a case here. Because you are in Christ, this is not you arguing your innocence; it is you agreeing out loud with a verdict that was handed down long before tonight, and it is spoken in His name and not your own. What He does with how you feel about it, and how soon, is His to decide, and He may answer over a season rather than in a night. Whose room this is was settled at a cross.
- Guilt, you do not get my bedroom. The Word of God says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, so the case you keep reopening at eleven at night was closed at a cross, and closed is closed.
- Body, lie down and rest in the name of Jesus. The Word says the Lord alone makes me dwell in safety, so I lie down in peace and sleep, and safety is not mine to stand guard over. God, You keep this house while I sleep.
- Shame that only arrives horizontal, you are put out of this bed. Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace and this room is Yours tonight, therefore what accuses me in the dark has no standing where You are. I lie down kept, and I am not the one on watch.
